Serviço de Apoio a Timor Leste
  • A tour to Timor Leste on 2013

Towards year-end 2013, two volunteer workers of Caritas Macau accompanied/went with Director Paul Pun to Timor-Leste. The purpose of the visit was to lay the groundwork for providing support services to the country.  In early April 2014, Caritas Macau formally established this service.  The primary objective is to provide support to Timor-Leste’s various agricultural programmes.  The goal is to enable the country to achieve self-sufficiency through the development of its agricultural sector; and, through the increased income from sales of agricultural products, to promote education, thereby allowing more  children to have the opportunity to attend school.

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is situated on the eastern portion of Timor Island in Southeast Asia.  Dili is its capital.  With a population of around 1.17 million, it is one of the poorest nations in the world.  Infant mortality is also one of the highest.  At present, approximately 43% of the population survive on less than US$1.00/day, and close to 80% of the poorest are enagaged in (subsistence) farming.  The majority of the people live under very difficult conditions.

Our Plans of Support

  • Caritas Macau organised a donation drive during the 2014 Lenten Season, with the stated purpose of providing assistance to Timor-Leste’s agricultural programmes.
  • We have also been collecting selected (used) items to send to Timor-Leste.  In April 2014, we have sent over computers, sewing machines, and baby carriages.
  • We will be setting up a donation box at the Caritas library to solicit funds from caring and supportive individuals for Timor-Leste.
